Seas Beneath (1931)
BACKGROUND
Seas Beneath gives us an intriguing glimpse into the slowly brewing tensions that were arising between international fascists who were preparing to take over Germany and the democratically inclined popular front which rose in opposition to the threat. Ford’s frustration while shooting the film stemmed from the fact that the inexperienced Marion Lessing was foisted upon him at the last minute by a studio executive who was personally involved with the actress. Although her social climbing personality lends itself to the nationalistic mind-set of her character, the chemistry between she and George O’Brian’s Captain Robert “Bob” Kingsley is virtually non-existent.
PLOT SUMMARY
American Naval men take to the seas in a civilian “mystery ship” in search of a notorious German U-Boat responsible for sinking several American vessels.
